Il CEO di Groupon sbattuto fuori: la lettera mi ha quasi fatto piangere

Meravigliosa la lettera di poco fa del CEO di Groupon a tutti i dipendenti, specialmente ai suoi collaboratori più cari: io penso di non avere ancora mai visto un esempio così clamoroso di autofustigazione per gli errori commessi e di sincerità nei confronti dell'azienda, dello staff e del mondo esterno.

Leggetela, perché merita veramente tanto.

People of Groupon,

After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I've decided that I'd like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding - I was fired today. If you're wondering why... you haven't been paying attention. From controversial metrics in our S1 to our material weakness to two quarters of missing our own expectations and a stock price that's hovering around one quarter of our listing price, the events of the last year and a half speak for themselves. As CEO, I am accountable.

You are doing amazing things at Groupon, and you deserve the outside world to give you a second chance. I'm getting in the way of that. A fresh CEO earns you that chance. The board is aligned behind the strategy we've shared over the last few months, and I've never seen you working together more effectively as a global company - it's time to give Groupon a relief valve from the public noise.

For those who are concerned about me, please don't be - I love Groupon, and I'm terribly proud of what we've created. I'm OK with having failed at this part of the journey. If Groupon was Battletoads, it would be like I made it all the way to the Terra Tubes without dying on my first ever play through. I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to take the company this far with all of you. I'll now take some time to decompress (FYI I'm looking for a good fat camp to lose my Groupon 40, if anyone has a suggestion), and then maybe I'll figure out how to channel this experience into something productive.

If there's one piece of wisdom that this simple pilgrim would like to impart upon you: have the courage to start with the customer. My biggest regrets are the moments that I let a lack of data override my intuition on what's best for our customers. This leadership change gives you some breathing room to break bad habits and deliver sustainable customer happiness - don't waste the opportunity!

Quando GNOME, e Fedora, ne imbroccano una

Oggi dopo aver guardato la conferenza di Nokia sui nuovi Lumia, mi sono baloccato un po' con la mia Fedora di cui avevo già scritto una corposa recensione: volendola usare come distro più o meno da produzione, l'ho aggiornata da qualche giorno a Fedora 18, e rinnovando come sempre l'impressione favorevole per GNOME come desktop "d'insieme", ho anche aggiunto oggi pomeriggio la lingua italiana. Usare il sistema in inglese non mi dispiace, devo dirlo, ma essendo comunque un autoctono romano vorrei sentirmi a casa nonostante le mie attitudini verso l'esterofilia linguistica.

Al che, ho dato un bel colpo di Control Center, e dopo un logoff-login mi sono trovato tutto il sistema in italiano - compresa una bella finestrella di dialogo modale di GNOME Shell che recitava quello che vedete sotto.

Ora, non so per  voi ma per me Desktop si è sempre chiamata Desktop. Ed è fantastico che Fedora mi proponga di lasciare i nomi delle directory in inglese, come sono adesso, perché invece non so se a voi è capitato ma a me si (tantissime volte), ma andando poi a mettere le mani e a fare il nerd sul PC di mia sorella che usa Ubuntu, e di tutti i miei amici che usano Ubuntu (si, ho degli amici che usano Ubuntu), e di tutto il mondo che usa Ubuntu, al fatidico cd Desktop per prendere una cosa e spostarla da un'altra parte - che checché ne dicano i fanatici del dragghendròp rimane molto più facile in quanto mv e un paio di colpi di tab al posto di ridurre tutto a icona o aprire il file manager - ecco appunto dicevo facendo il nerd su Ubuntu, ~/Desktop viene rinominata automaticamente in ~/Scrivania, e io ho sempre perso la testa per questa cosa, compreso il fatto che a volte per idiozia mia, che invocavo roba nel desktop, mi sono saltati anche un paio di script.

Ecco, a me questa cosa di Fedora è piaciuta parecchio. E spero sinceramente che Canonical includa un qualche cacchio di dialogo di configurazione per riportare queste directory a dei nomi da nerd, ché noi nerd degli esseri umani ce ne sbattiamo.

Avete presente quella sensazione di lanciare Twitantonio - e il giorno dopo sei su tutti i giornali? Paolo per esempio ce l'ha presente. Luca pure. Insomma, quella roba, quella sensazione.

È successo che poi la cosa interessava molto, e quindi nonostante io sia comunque un collaboratore di Intervistato.com, dato che i miei sodali adorano vedermi sullo schermo e non solo (la pagherete per avermi mandato sul palco da solo a #sod13, gente), mi sono intrattenuto con Maria Petrescu in quelli che dovevano essere degli eleganti 10 minuti di intervista, e sono diventati dei colloquiali, stravaccati, e notevoli 25 minuti di chiacchierata su Twitantonio e sulla situazione degli open data, e dell'hacking civico come disciplina, in Italia.

Mi ha fatto veramente piacere, sia l'intervista, sia il fatto che non sia stata tagliata. Ringrazio Intervistato e l'immancabile community di Spaghetti Open Data, dato che senza i miei compagni rivoluzionari di merende nulla di tutto questo avrebbe avuto luogo.

Instagram introduce il feed web

Notevole l'ultima comparsa per quanto riguarda l'interfaccia web di Instagram: sono appena stati introdotti i feed per la navigazione web delle proprie sottoscrizioni, in maniera totalmente analoga a quello che accade nell'applicazione per smartphone. Instagram perde quindi la sua elitarietà, il suo elemento distintivo, il focus sul mobile che tanto ha reso celebre la startup più discussa del 2012.

Dal blog ufficiale viene la conferma:

We believe that you should be able to access Instagram on a variety of different devices, any of which may be convenient to you at a given moment – including your desktop computer or tablet. We do not offer the ability to upload from the web as Instagram is about producing photos on the go, in the real world, in realtime. On the other hand, Instagram for the web is focused on making the browsing experience a fast, simple and enjoyable one.

Posso catalogarlo come notevole sputtanamento? Nemmeno tanto. Alla fine, coi primi passi dell'interfaccia web, questa si dimostra solo l'inevitabile prosecuzione del ciclo di vita di un social network che tanti dubbi ha sollevato e tanti dubbi lascerà dopo la propria dipartita. Che ci sarà, statene certi. La bolla Instagram sta per scoppiare.

Aneddoti su processi software open source e virtuosi

Leggo proprio oggi dal blog di Aaron Seigo una storia meravigliosa sullo sviluppo open source e su come diversi soggetti provenienti (alla fin fine) da background diversi possano mettere insieme un ottimo workflow.

A couple of people have been working on bringing Plasma Active to the Nexus 7 device. I noted this on the Google+ community page and a person responded saying that if there was documentation on how to have both Android and Plasma Active on the device that would make it a lot more attractive to them. Alan Pope from Canonical showed up and shared a link to a page in the Ubuntu wiki showing how this can be done. I shared that on irc with Ruediger Gad, who jumped on Google+ to respond directly saying that they will add this to the documentation when he has a chance. At which point Bill Newton popped up saying he has dual-booting working and by that evening he had updated the wiki showing how to accomplish this. I love that kind of dynamic in the Free software world: from problem to solution in a span of a day with the help of multiple hands.

Senza dubbio notevole. Un paio di osservazioni collaterali: innanzi tutto l'uso che gli sviluppatori fanno di Google+. A me sembra infatti che oltre che una social platform, Google abbia messo su qualcosa che si presta straordinariamente al networking tra sviluppatori e tech addicted. La seconda osservazione riguarda il fatto che durante il processo sia intervenuto qualcuno di Canonical, e non sia stato guardato (e trattato) come un infetto di Left 4 Dead 2. Ed è meraviglioso, considerando quanta buona fama circonda Canonical nell'ambito dello sviluppo upstream, no?
